“I had been a quarterback in a predominately white environment all the way from midget-league football through college football, so it wasn’t overwhelming to me personally,” said Briscoe. “Of course, the African-American community around the nation was on edge to see what I was going to do. I had to prove to the naysayers that a black man could play on that level. Would there be a backlash from fans? Would there be a backlash from white teammates who not only never played with a black quarterback but in some cases never had a black teammate?”
