Book of Negroes Star Joins “The Magician”
Lyriq Bent to play NFL’s First Starting Black QB Marlin Briscoe
(Hollywood, CA – March 18, 2016) West Omaha Films and Falconer Pictures announced today that Lyriq Bent has been attached to portray the iconic NFL legend, Marlin Briscoe, in The Magician, the Marlin Briscoe Story. Doug Falconer (Forsaken, Warrior’s Way) is producing for West Omaha Films along with Terry Hanna, David B. Clark and John Beasley (Rudy, The Apostle). The original screenplay penned by Gregory Allen Howard (Remember the Titans, Ali).
Bent was recently awarded the Best Actor in a Leading Dramatic Role at the 2016 Canadian Screen Awards for the award multi winning mini-series, The Book of Negroes.
The Magician is the story of Marlin Briscoe, the first starting black quarterback in the NFL. It is the painful, but supremely redemptive story of a young black man who in 1968 entered the NFL at a time when African-Americans were not being given the opportunity to play at quarterback position in the league. For one glorious truncated season, Marlin Briscoe proved that he could compete at the highest levels of the NFL at the quarterback position, accounting for over 70 percent of the offense for the Denver Broncos, holding a rookie touchdown record, 14, that still stands to this day. Briscoe’s real story is one of incredible redemption. The film chronicles Briscoe’s triumphant comeback from addiction and despair and his amazing personal journey of self-discovery.

“I’ve waited along time for this. I could not be more pleased by the producer’s choice. I’m incredibly honored to have Lyriq bring my story to life” said the humble Briscoe when he received the news that Lyriq Bent had been cast to play him in The Magician.
NFL Film’s late great Steve Sabol said “Marlin Briscoe’s story is one of the most inspirational in NFL history, his eventual comeback is as dramatic as any down to the wire football game, and one that should never be forgotten.”
NFLPA President Ahmad Nassar said “Marlin stands as a hero to anyone who dares to dream the impossible and break through unbreakable barriers.”
NFL Hall of Fame QB Warren Moon said “I owe Marlin a great deal, as does every black quarterback that followed in his footsteps. Marlin surely owns a piece of the Doug Williams Super Bowl victory, my Hall of Fame career, and the spectacular college and pro careers of the new breed of African Americans everywhere currently playing and flourishing at the quarterback position.”
Producer Doug Falconer added; “We’ve worked very hard to get the screenplay to a place where we hope the NFL will support the film. The fact is however; this is the story of a man, not a football player, who refused to give up on himself and went onto be a force for positive change in the lives of young and old people all across America. Almost 50 years later, it would be impossible to think the NFL would not support this triumphant story in every way possible.”
Marlin will be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2016. In September 2016 a bronze statue will be unveiled at Briscoe’s alma mater, the University of Nebraska Omaha, in honor of Marlin Briscoe’s contributions to his community.
Bent is repped by Don Buchwald & Associates, The Associates Talent & Literary Management and managed by Gorav Seth of Seth Management.
Filming on “The Magician” is expected to begin principle photography in late-summer 2016 and to be released in 2017.
